Kodak Vision3 AHU: same cinematic film look, built differently
Last year, Kodak announced an upgrade to its Vision3 Color Negative Films: an Anti-Halation Undercoat (AHU) instead of the carbon remjet backing. AHU does everything remjet did: protects the film from scratches, prevents halation around light sources, and eliminates static in motion picture cameras.
The real upgrade is in the lab workflow. We no longer need manual ECN-2 development; Kodak Vision3 AHU processes in standard C-41 chemistry, alongside other color negative films.
Why ECN-2 Became Less Practical
ECN-2 was never built for small labs like ours. In Hollywood, the remjet layer comes off automatically in a pre-bath, then the film runs through ECN-2 chemistry in large continuous processors, with high-end scanners to match.
We were among the first labs in Berlin to offer this manual process anyway. After COVID, C-41 color negative stock got harder to find: Fujifilm discontinued roll after roll, and Kodak's prices kept climbing. To keep shooting film affordable, we started respooling Kodak Vision3 for still photography, and adapted our lab to develop ECN-2 in the process.
Four years later, Kodak released its upgraded film stock, and we breathed a sigh of relief.
What Makes Kodak 800T AHU Different

How Kodak 800T AHU Looks
Kodak Vision3 AHU’s color palette is very different from other C-41 color negative films:
- cool, prominent tones
- deep blues, greens, and reds – the classic “cinematic film look”
- soft highlight roll-off
- visible grain
- wide dynamic range that’s ideal for editing

The final look depends on your light source. Since this film has built-in color compensation for artificial light, it reads most naturally under tungsten (3200K) lamps. Under white LED, expect cooler results with cinematic reds and greens. In daylight, shoot with an 85B filter for natural color. Without it, you'll get deep blue tones and a slightly desaturated look.

Shooting and Editing Tips
- Shoot under warm (3200K) artificial light
- Use 85B filter or switch to Kodak Vision3 400D AHU when shooting in daylight
- Try flash for stronger subject separation at night. Bonus tip: pair it with a metallic / steel background
- Scan it using professional equipment to get max from its tonal range
- Don’t be shy to edit your scans: there’s a lot of info in both highlights and shadows, so you can shape the final look (or simply fix white balance from blue to natural one)

Final thoughts
Kodak AHU 800T isn’t a replacement for Vision3. Think of it as Vision v3.1. The new layer upgrades both our lab workflow and your experience shooting it. You’ll get the same cinematic film look, just faster and cheaper than with the classic ECN-2 process.

Can Kodak AHU 800T be used in a regular 35mm camera?
Yes! The new AHU version is designed with still photographers in mind, so it loads smoothly into any 35mm camera.
Is Kodak AHU 800T beginner-friendly?
It's good (and affordable!) film to start with. It's forgiving with over- and underexposure, has a wide dynamic range, and gives you plenty of freedom in post-production. The one thing to consider: it doesn't have the classic warm look of Kodak Gold.
Can Kodak AHU 800T be shot indoors without studio light?
Yes! It performs best under warm (3200K) tungsten light, so bars and yellow-lit streets give you natural, cinematic results. White LED lamps bring out cooler blues and reds.

Is Kodak AHU 800T a good choice for portraits?
It's a strong pick for cinematic portraits and conceptual photosets: blueish, grainy, with gorgeous reds. For more natural skin tones, just fix the white balance in post. Either way, expect more grain and cooler tones than warm ones.
Can Kodak AHU 800T create a movie-still feeling without heavy editing?
Absolutely. The color palette already looks cinematic, so you can skip heavy editing if you pick your light source well.
