What B&W film can be processed?

We develop all kinds of black and white film — infrared, chromogenic, orthochromatic, X-ray, and more.

But if the film doesn’t match the label (like a Kodak Gold canister with Kentmere Pan inside or a mystery roll with a weird name), let us know what’s inside so we can get the development time right :)

P.S. If you're sending Ilford XP2, go to our C-41 dev & scan page. It can be tricky, but it’s processed like color film.

How we process black and white film:

If you develop black and white film at home, you know that every little step shapes the final look:

  • developer type
  • processing time
  • temperature
  • agitation method and frequency

At the lab, we wanted our black and white film developing service to be both consistent and high quality. That’s why we chose to stick with just one developer — Ilford Ilfotec HC.It’s our go-to for clean, reliable results — and your feedback tells us it works beautifully.

But in such a manual process, just sticking to one developer isn’t enough to ensure stability. We needed equipment we could trust — like the Konica we already use for C-41. So when we got a spare one, we challenged ourselves to make it work for B&W film. It took a lot of testing, but now it runs like a dream.

BW film developing has 5 main stages:

  • development
  • stop bath
  • fixing bath
  • washing
  • drying

Once your roll is loaded, it runs through our machine, moving through each chemical bath with the right timing, temperature, and agitation. This setup gives us consistent results and ensures a faster turnaround.

Push/pull

If you want to push or pull your roll we can do that without extra charge. Just let us know when placing your order what ISO you shot at and how many stops you’d like to push / pull.

Scanning

Last stop: the Noritsu HS-1800

It's a fast scanner with Digital ICE*, but here's the catch: it doesn't work on black and white negatives. See that dust on your frame? Exactly, you won't. We manually clean up every little flaw and even rotate your photos, so they’re good to go.

We can scan your frames up to 4000×6000 px, and offer two file formats:

  • JPG – ready-to-post
  • TIFF – flat scans, perfect for post-processing

If you’re planning to edit the scans yourself, print them big, or use them in a project — go for the Biggie TIFF. It gives you the most detail and flexibility, without adjustments from our side.

We’ll send your frames straight to your inbox. Scan links are active for 3 days — if you miss the deadline, just send us your order number and we’ll reupload the files.

We keep your negatives for 1 month. Need more time to pick them up? Just let us know and we’ll hold onto them a bit longer.

DO YOU SCAN HALF-FRAMES?

Yes! We can scan them in pairs or one by one — whatever works best for you. Just give us the heads-up when you order.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FLASH AND BIGGIE?

Think of it like this: if you’re going big — like for an exhibition or a gift — biggie’s your go-to

For everything else — flash. It’s fast, flexible and perfect for quick edits and everyday needs.

JPG OR TIFF?

If you’re looking for scans that are ready to post but still flexible for adjustments, go with JPG. We’ll make sure they look great, and you can tweak them however you like.

If you’re going for a certain look, go with TIFF for flat, untouched scans ready for your editing.

I DIDN’T QUITE LIKE THE RESULTS…

Then let’s improve them! Scanning is all about your personal style, so let’s tweak it until it’s just right for you.

WHAT IF I HAVE A BLANK ROLL OF FILM?

Oh, it’s the worst, we feel you.

We’ll refund the scan and just charge for the development. This also applies if your film is fogged or has damaged / transparent perforation.
