What is ECN2 film developing
ECN stands for Eastman Color Negative. It’s the standard process used to develop motion picture film.
ECN2 film vs. color negative film
The rem-jet layer is what sets motion picture film apart. It’s a protective backing made of carbon, wax, and adhesive, designed to protect the film from scratches and static as it runs through a movie camera.
If a roll of ECN 2 film (with rem-jet still on) ends up in our color developing machine, it’s bad news. The rem-jet would mess up the chemistry and damage the other film in the tank. And yep, we’d be cleaning the machine for the rest of the day.
That was a smooth transition to…
What makes ECN 2 processing special?
ECN2 processing begins by removing the rem-jet layer. It takes some extra time and care, but once that’s done, the film moves through the usual steps:
- developer
- stop
- bleach
- fixer
- wash
- final rinse
- dryer
Film scanning
Once your film is developed, we scan it on the Noritsu scanner, known for speed, consistency, and its Digital ICE technology, which automatically removes dust and scratches.
It can scan your frames up to 4000×6000 px at 4600 ppi, offering two output formats:
- JPG – ready-to-post
- TIFF – flat scans, perfect for post-processing
Before sending, we always go over the scans manually: flipping frames, removing any visible marks, and adjusting exposure and color so you get results you’re genuinely happy with.
If you’re planning to edit the scans yourself, print them big, or use them in a project — go for the Biggie TIFF. It gives you the most detail and flexibility, without any adjustments from our side
How ECN-2 scans look
If you’re used to Kodak Gold, Portra, or Ultramax look, motion picture film will feel totally different. Daylight-balanced films like 50D, 250D, or 400D tend to have cooler, richer tones with stunning reds and blues. Tungsten-balanced films — 200T, 500T, 800T — shift toward greenish hues when shot in daylight because they’re balanced for 3200K lighting. But under artificial light, these films give you the result that looks straight out of a Wong Kar-wai movie.

DO YOU SCAN HALF-FRAMES?
Yes! We can scan them in pairs or one by one — whatever works best for you. Just give us the heads-up when you order.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FLASH AND BIGGIE?
Think of it like this: if you’re going big — like for an exhibition or a gift — biggie’s your go-to
For everything else — flash. It’s fast, flexible and perfect for quick edits and everyday needs.
JPG OR TIFF?
If you’re looking for scans that are ready to post but still flexible for adjustments, go with JPG. We’ll make sure they look great, and you can tweak them however you like.
If you’re going for a certain look, go with TIFF for flat, untouched scans ready for your editing.
I DIDN’T QUITE LIKE THE RESULTS…
Then let’s improve them! Scanning is all about your personal style, so let’s tweak it until it’s just right for you.
WHAT IF I HAVE A BLANK ROLL OF FILM?
Oh, it’s the worst, we feel you.
We’ll refund the scan and just charge for the development. This also applies if your film is fogged or has damaged / transparent perforation.
